Family Water Activities in Llangollen: What to Try with Kids

Llangollen sits in one of the most naturally dramatic parts of North Wales, with the River Dee running through the valley and the Llangollen Canal following the hillside above it. For families, that combination is genuinely useful. It means flat water and moving water in the same place, with activities to suit children who want a gentle introduction to paddlesports and those who are ready for something with a bit more excitement.

Ty Nant Outdoors offers a range of family-friendly water activities, with options that allow parents and children to paddle together as well as sessions where older children can take charge of their own craft. If you’re planning a day out and you’re not sure which session suits your family, what follows should help.

Starting on the Canal: Canoeing Together

For most families, the canoe tours are the natural place to start. The reason is simple: you’re in the same boat. Two and three-seater open canoes mean parents and children paddle together, with a qualified coach leading the group along the Llangollen Canal at a relaxed pace. There’s no need to manage separate boats or worry about a child drifting ahead. The session is designed to work for mixed abilities, including complete beginners.

Ty Nant runs two canoe tours on the canal. The Pontcysyllte Aqueduct Canoe Tour takes you over the aqueduct itself, Thomas Telford’s UNESCO World Heritage structure, 38 metres above the River Dee, on a journey that younger children consistently remember.

If your children are nervous about heights, the Chirk Aqueduct and Tunnel Canoe Tour is worth considering instead. The Chirk Aqueduct sits lower, and the highlight of that session is paddling through the Chirk Tunnel. It’s a different kind of adventure that tends to appeal to children who enjoy exploring somewhere a little unusual.

Both sessions are designed to be accessible to beginners and work particularly well for families paddling together for the first time. Dogs are also welcome on guided canoe tours at the owner’s risk.

A First Kayak Session for Older Children and Teenagers

The canoe tours put everyone in the same boat. The Aqueduct Intro to Kayaking is different because each paddler gets their own river-style kayak, making it a natural next step for children who are ready for a bit more independence.

The session takes place on the canal, is fully coach-led, and includes a journey over the Pontcysyllte Aqueduct. Parents take part alongside their children while the coach guides the group through the fundamentals of paddling. It’s a great option for older children and teenagers who like the idea of being in control of their own craft.

For the More Adventurous: The River Dee

If your children are confident swimmers and you’re looking for something with a little more excitement, both Discover Whitewater and Llangollen Rafting take place on the River Dee.

Discover Whitewater is designed to help beginners build confidence on moving water before progressing to the rapids. No previous kayaking experience is needed, but participants must be able to swim and meet the activity’s minimum age requirements.

Llangollen Rafting offers a different experience. Families travel together in a raft with a qualified guide, tackling famous sections of the River Dee including the Serpent’s Tail and the Town Falls above Llangollen Bridge. For families looking for shared excitement rather than individual paddling, rafting can be a great choice. It is suitable for children aged 8 and over, provided they are accompanied by a parent or legal guardian.

Want to Go at Your Own Pace? Canoe Hire on the Canal

The Canoe Hire option is worth knowing about for families who have paddled before and want more flexibility.

Starting from Trevor Basin, you can hire an open canoe and explore the Llangollen Canal at your own pace. Half-day and full-day options are available, allowing families to spend as much time on the water as they like.

This option tends to suit families who already have some paddling experience and are comfortable navigating independently. If it’s your first time on the water, one of the guided canoe tours is usually the better place to begin.

Practical Notes Before You Book

Of course, not everyone wants to sit in a canoe or kayak.

If you’d rather try something completely different, the Chirk Aqueduct and Tunnel SUP Tour is worth considering.

Stand-up paddleboarding offers a different challenge altogether. You’re on your feet, balancing on the board, paddling through Chirk Tunnel before crossing the aqueduct. It’s available to beginners and makes a great choice for groups who want to try something none of them have done before.

Canoeing and Kayaking at Ty Nant Outdoors

Equipment is provided on all coached sessions, so there’s no need to buy specialist gear before your visit.

For most activities, you’ll simply need suitable clothing, old trainers that can get wet, a towel, and a change of clothes for afterwards. If you’d like more detail, our guide to What to Wear Kayaking or Paddleboarding in North Wales covers everything you need to know.

Many families also aren’t sure whether a canoe or kayak is the better choice for their group. If that sounds familiar, our guide to Kayaking vs Canoeing: What’s the Difference and Which Should You Try? explains the key differences and can help you decide.

If you’re still unsure which activity is right for your family, get in touch with us. We’ll be happy to help you choose the session that best matches your group’s ages, confidence levels, and sense of adventure.
